Ellen Vincent was a researcher at Clemson’s School of Agricultural, Forest and Environmental Sciences. She conducted a pilot project on Clemson Students to measure the amount of pain experienced when they put their hands in ice water while looking at certain images. They found students had the least pain while looking at the images depicting nature scenes that allowed viewers to put themselves in the setting while feeling safe. They then showed those same images to hospital patients and added their responses to the mix.
Can Nature Images Reduce Pain in Patients?
The outcome, “All the nature images are better than no image at all. And it seems to be that the images that allow people to feel as though they are a part of it, or have influence on their thoughts have the most positive associations that can relieve pain.”
Her conclusion “Nature images result in less pain and lower diastolic blood pressure and if people feel better, they may heal faster.”
